Chateau Dauzac Margaux 2009
Château Dauzac stands out for having a vineyard of 49 hectares in one piece, spread over the Margaux appellation (45 hectares) and Haut-Médoc (4 hectares). The vines are protected from the ocean wind by the surrounding forests of about 70 hectares and grow on a first layer of gravel and a second layer of clay and lime. There are 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and some Petit Verdot vines.
The harvest is done by hand to preserve the fruit content as much as possible. Each plot is then vinified individually. The extraction is carried out as gently as possible. In 2016, Château Dauzac became the first Grand Cru Classé according to the 1855 classification to produce a "vegan" wine with vegetable proteins instead of egg whites. The wines mature for 12 to 18 months in oak barrels (60% new wood).
The wine has an intense purple color. Black fruit and herbs mingle in the bouquet. The taste is dense, intense and particularly full. The tannins need several years to become supple. This is certainly a wine with great aging potential.
THE WINERY CHÂTEAU DAUZAC
MAIF has owned Château Dauzac since 1989 and in 2014 acquired Vignobles Lurton's shares in the winery's operating company. The insurance company has completely renovated the winery and produces one of the best wines of the appellation. Christian Roulleau, founder of SAMSIC, now leads the company. Laurent Fortin is general manager and Philippe Roux is technical director.
Château Dauzac has the great privilege of having a contiguous vineyard area of 49 hectares. 45 hectares are in the Margaux appellation and 4 hectares in the Haut-Médoc appellation. The winery is located not far from the Gironde estuary, which has a positive effect on the vineyard ecosystem. Thanks to its privileged location among 120 hectares of meadows and forests, the winery is protected from the ocean winds. After destemming, the grapes ferment in stainless steel tanks. These are equipped with a patented system for pumping the pomace cap, allowing excellent extraction of the tannins. Plots and grape varieties are vinified separately. In this way, suitable tanks can be selected in which only the assembly for the Château Dauzac takes place. The second wine, La Bastide Dauzac, is made from younger vines or from locations with less good exposure. It is produced with the same care as the Grand Vin.
