Hardy Wines
The Hardys story begins with the man who gave us his name: Thomas Hardy. From the moment he arrived in Australia in 1850, his ingenuity, determination and hard work built a business that has lasted for more than 160 years.
By 1900 Thomas Hardy and Sons was the largest winemaker in South Australia, so when Thomas's original winery at Bankside burned to the ground in 1904 it could have been a devastating blow, but Thomas took it upon himself and continued its new, larger location at Mile End.
“Widely regarded as the father of the wine industry in South Australia, he was a great pioneer who came to Australia as a young man and through his boundless energy built a company known in both hemispheres and which was instrumental in winning the central state has such a prominent position as a wine producer.”
The Hardys story begins with the man who gave us his name, Thomas Hardy. From the moment he arrived in Australia in 1850, his ingenuity, determination and hard work built a business that has lasted more than 160 years.
In 1878 Thomas Hardy transformed an old corn mill on the main street of McLaren Vale into The Hardys Tintara, and with his success the township of McLaren Vale began to prosper and grow. Today we are proud to still call this winery our home.
