Dr. Pauly
The main asset of the Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler Winery consists of its vineyards. Extensive care for these vineyards, combined with intentionally low yields and selective hand processing, guarantee our extraordinary wines and their individual and unique character. The wine cellar focuses on a gentle treatment of the grapes and young wines. Small stainless steel tanks are used where the grapes from each vineyard can be fermented separately.
Temperature controlled fermentation is kept very slow and at low temperatures to preserve the diversity of aromas and the vitality of the wines. In most vintage years, they've found all varieties on a good wine menu, ranging from a juicy, hearty table wine to a creamy, sweet dry berry selection.
Territory. The dr. Pauly-Bergweiler winery has 16 hectares of Riesling vineyards in the steep, sloping Middle Moselle region. More than 75 % of the vineyards are marked “Steillage”. The soil of the vineyard is mainly remnants of Devon slate soils with various parts of the topsoil and mineral stone. The slate gives the wines a delicate and cool minerality typical of a Moselle Riesling . The combination of cool climate, slate and Riesling makes our wines unique.
The Moselle Valley is one of the oldest wine regions in Germany. The steep slopes, densely planted with vineyards, make the Moselle a unique cultural and oenological landscape in the wine world. Indeed, the wine-growing tradition on the Moselle dates back to the Romans, 2000 years ago, whose many historic winepress houses can still be found in the river valley. Nearly 9,000 hectares of vineyards on the German part of the Moselle stretch for 243 kilometers, starting on the upper Moselle at Perl and ending in Koblenz, where the Moselle flows into the River Rhine.
The steep slate slopes of the Moselle store heat during the day and release it to the vines at night, providing a unique microclimate and optimal conditions for the growth of one of the best grape varieties in the world – the “Queen of Wines”. — the Riesling . This grape variety thrives on the slopes of the Moselle and produces finely fruity, high-mineral wines that are admired by wine connoisseurs on all continents
